Shared Music DNA?

I can’t believe I never figured this out before.

The recent post about “Electric Youth” got me thinking and listening, and on the way home from work yesterday, it hit me: Foolish Beat” by Debbie Gibson IS the bubblegum rewrite of Wham’s “Careless Whisper.

It’s all there. The raspy blues-ish alto sax, the sappy “I lost you and I’ll never get over it” message, the minor key. Not only are the song titles similar, each is uttered only once as part of the second verse of its respective song.

I wonder if Debbie was a big George Michael fan? 🙂

Favorite Music: Lead Voices

If you’re a long-time reader of Sliding Constant, then you might remember my last “Favorite Music” post, which covered my love of vocal harmony. This one is about vocals as well, but this time I’m going to share some of my favorite lead vocalists.

The Tape

I was cleaning out the truck this evening, and I found The Tape. I can’t believe it. Over 21 years ago, I was passing the time on a summer afternoon recording songs off the radio on my dad’s cassette radio. Basically, if a song sounded interesting, I kept it. I ended up filling up most of one of those good old cheap “low noise” C-60 cassettes.

Guilty Pleasure

Gwen Stefani’s Hollaback Girl video has become a new guilty pleasure for me, I think. The lyrics are truly inane, but I can’t help but watch. 🙂 The funny thing is that I don’t normally find her all that attractive. Actually, I think it’s all the high school band imagery and sound that do it for me. I could be wrong, but it looks like they wrangled members from a real band (or bands) to help with the video. It’s a very Tusk-esque song in that way (yes, I know Fleetwood Mac didn’t use a high school band… just go with it).

Survivor and Starbucks

I think most of my friends know that I’m a big 80’s melodic rock fan. One of my favorite groups from that genre is Survivor. The other night on TV, I saw a new Starbucks commercial (the previous text was a link to a .wmv file [the file is still there], but the newest Firefox isn’t happy with it, so I got rid of the link). I almost fell off the couch laughing and screaming when I figured out that it was really Survivor in the commercial. That’s just absolutely priceless.

Note:
The commercial in the file above is longer than the one they’re showing on TV. I can’t believe they wrote an entire verse and chorus!

Favorite Music: Vocal Harmony

I’ve been planning this for a while. Some of my friends have heard me talking about it for a few weeks now. This is my first post in a series where I talk about the music I like and why I like it. At the least, it may generate some interesting comments. At best, I’m hoping to get some suggestions on new music to listen to. I have decided to organize the posts by musical “characteristics”. Going from there, several natural divisions fall out. This post is dedicated to music that grabs me because of vocal harmony.

Beetles, Joyrides, and Fried Chicken

Anyone who has read my first post here is aware that I associate certain music very strongly with events or periods in my life. From time to time, I’m going to drop in a nugget here and there. Tonight’s selection concerns a set of pop music that I’ve come to call “Com-Pak music.”
